6 Ways to Increase Space in your Small Bathroom

With apartment sizes shrinking, many homeowners are ignoring the bathroom size and shape. Instead, the attention is shifting towards the function rather than form.

With a few nip and tucks, you can save a lot of space in your regular bathroom. Let us take a look at some of the simple yet efficient ways to increase space in small bathroom.

Vanity Swap
Vanity cabinets are a given in most bathrooms. However, as much as they provide storage, they occupy a lot of space as well. In a small bathroom, you might not need a huge storage solution. So, swap your vanity cabinets with a simple pedestal sink.

The space is increased albeit at the cost of sacrificing some storage area. The area underneath the sink will appear more spacious. If you are not willing to swap the vanity, you can opt for vanity with raised cabinets. Or opt an open-console vanity design that liberates some space in horizontal direction as there is no door obstruction.

Remove Shower Curtain
Shower curtains can reduce the space in bathroom since they tend to block out the vertical space. Patterned or fabric shower curtains enhance this effect more. Instead, install immovable glass partition or glass shower doors. These transparent elements will increase the airy feel in the bathroom and also enhance lighting inside.

Clear the Clutter
Many bathroom elements such as bins, baskets, shelves can come handy for storing a variety of items. These help to keep the bathroom organized and clutter free. But an overload of these items can cause claustrophobic effect. So, choose wall mounted alternatives for each of these and choose built-in storage.

Shelf units must be installed only at necessary places. Liberate as much horizontal and vertical space as you can by removing the clutter.

Paint It
Colors are known to have huge impact on our psychology. So, use them to your advantage. Paints can help you transform and increase space in small bathroom. If there is lack of natural light in your bathroom, you can paint it in light colors to increase the airy feel. Neutral colors also have similar effects.

Use small traces of dark shades to provide adequate contrast. If possible, provide an ingress to the natural sunlight.

Bathroom Lighting
Old bathroom designs had no regard to lighting. Dated lighting fixtures can provide a gloomy feel to your bathroom and give the illusion of small space. A modest investment in bathroom lighting can yield considerable results.

Install sconces on both sides of the mirror to distribute the light evenly. Replace the outdated ceiling bulb design with something more decorative.

Single ceiling light can create shadows in the bathroom leading to blind spots. Also, recessed lighting can be used in the ceiling or above the shower. Consider installing waterproof covers over the lights to protect them from accidental water shock.

There are many other ways to increase space in small bathroom besides these methods. You can choose a small countertop and shower as per your bathroom size. Also, additional lavatories can be built under un-used staircase space to free space in the primary bathroom.
