Guide to Bathroom Lighting

Guide to Bathroom Lighting

Lighting is given negligible consideration in the bathroom. Usually, one light source on the ceiling is considered enough. Bathroom is the most overlooked room in the house when it comes to lighting.

But as more and more people are choosing bathrooms to relax and rejuvenate, lighting importance is also growing. And if done right, the payoff is definitely enriching.

Bathroom is where your day starts and ends. So, putting some effort is definitely worth it. Here are some areas to focus on.

Task Lighting
The lighting for vanity is very important since it is used during grooming or make up. The fixtures should be able to properly illuminate the facial features especially the face and the head as well.

Generally, people put lighting source in a recessed ceiling fixture directly above the bathroom mirror. Such a placement should be avoided because it shadow on the face does not help with the daily grooming.

The best place to install lighting is to install the source on either side of the bathroom mirror. This creates a uniform light distribution on the face. In case, the shape, size or location of the mirror does not permit side lighting, only then light source must be placed above the mirror.

A height of 75-80 inches from the bathroom floor is considered appropriate to install the sconces. The design of the sconce should be such that light is distributed evenly.

Another important area of task lighting is the shower. If the shower curtains are dark, you should consider installing a recessed lighting source directly above the shower area. Such as lighting may not be necessary in case the shower doors are made of glass.

Ambient Lighting
Ambient light is known as an alternative to the natural light. This is the prominent light source in the bathroom and is fixed in the center of the ceiling. Instead of the dull light bulb or CFL, you can get creative and install a chandelier or a pendant lamp. This will certainly spice things up in the bathroom.

Cove lighting is another alternative to dull light source in the bathroom. This consists of a rope light that is hanged from the ceiling. A soft uniform glow is spread throughout the bathroom creating the most heavenly experience.

Accent Lighting
Accent lighting can be used to focus light on a particular area of interest in the bathroom. For example, it can focus on the painting installed in the powder room or at the intricate plumbing beneath the designer sink.

Similarly, accent lighting can be ordered in the recessed design allowing you to focus on the mosaic tile work or marble. Sparkling effects are reflected perfectly well through properly installed accent lighting.

Safety First
While designing bathroom lighting, pay close attention to safety also. Do not compromise safety for the sake of style. Bathroom lighting serves a practical purpose of illuminating the most frequently used room of the house.

Make sure all the important fixtures and other vital elements are visible clearly. If done right, bathroom has the potential of starting your day with a great zeal.
