How to Fence With Hedges

How To Fence With Hedges

Fencing with hedges has been there for a long time, although a lot of people adopted chain link fences, the focus is now shifting back to hedge fences. They bring a natural look to your home and promote privacy.

Furthermore, hedges control soil erosion and wind as well as cut out noise from the traffic. Fencing with hedges is also economical; actually it is cheaper than chain link fence and rarely requires replacement.

Consult your local nursery on which shrubs grow best in your area. In this article we will write on the most common shrubs and trees that make greatfence with hedges.

What you will need

  • Shrubs

  • Measuring tape

Steps to Follow

1. You need to plant a hedge in a narrow space such that it does not grow into your neighbor’s compound. Select shrubs with a columnar form such as the upright Chinese juniper (scientific name is Juniperus chinensis). Spread this shrub between 5 to 15 feet wide.

Also spread 15 – 20 feet of Leyland cypress (Cupressocyparis leylandii) which makes it possible for narrow fencing between houses.  If your backyard is large, you can place the trees and shrubs in a wider spread by adding the Eastern white pine which is 20 – 40 foot wide

.

2. To ensure you living privacy, space the shrubs and trees close to each other in a hedge such that they form dense foliage. Plant the evergreen arborvitae about 15 – 20 feet apart in a row. As the shrub mature the tree branches and thick foliage of shrubs will block any spaces in between the hedge fence.

3. Like mentioned above, the hedge can help to reduce traffic noise, you can enable this by fencing the street side of your house. Maintain the neatness of the hedge by trimming and pruning in order to avoid an overgrowth into the sidewalk.

4. To avoid unauthorized access of people and animals alike, build a protective fence with a hedge that has spines and stickers. This will keep intruders from trying to go through the fence.

5. You can plan your yard into beautiful sections by planting a hedge of short shrubs around your vegetable garden, grass or play area for your kids. The Canadian yew is a good example of such a shrub, it is medium textured and grows up to 6 feet high and 8 feet wide.

It is evergreen making it suitable to create an attractive divide around your yard. Ideally you can plan a hedge with flowers such as the Forsythia which grows as a bush of bright yellow flowers in spring and creates a colorful yard that is very attractive.

Making a fence with hedges takes time, the shrubs and trees need to grow and this can take a lot of time. The good thing about a fence with hedges is that, as it grows out you can trim it in a shape that you want and the length that you desire. Once it is fully established you do not need to worry about noisy neighbors since you will have privacy in your compound.
